Lenovo Vibe Z Smartphone : Review

Laptops, tablets or mobile phones—devices from the $34-billion Chinese IT and communications major Lenovo are widely known for their sturdy build and good performance. I can vouch for these traits from close quarters. I have owned the company’s Y500 laptop, which I purchased almost nine years back; the notebook is definitely heavy like a piece of rock, but is a fantastic mix of hardware and software that offers a good work and entertainment experience. Believe me, the aging laptop still rocks!
You’ll get the power vibe with the Beijing-headquartered company’s Vibe Z phone too. This is the latest addition to the Lenovo Vibe series of smartphones and is an ideal combination of striking looks, good design, captivating performance and latest technology to help you to do more in lesser time. We’ll talk about its performance later, first it is pertinent to throw some light on the broad trends emerging from the country’s mobile landscape.
The overall India phone market stood at close to 257 million units in CY 2013—an 18% increase from 218 million units in CY2012. India was one of the fastest growing countries worldwide in terms of smartphone adoption in 2013. According to IDC, in 2013 the smartphone market surpassed 44 million units shipped, up from 16.2 million in 2012. While this surge has been mainly powered by home grown vendors which have shown a tremendous and consistent growth over the past four quarters of 2013, the established MNC handset makers such as Samsung, Nokia, Lenovo, BlackBerry and LG have understood the importance of creating a diverse portfolio of devices at varied price points. Especially Lenovo, which has secured its leadership in the laptop market and has now set sights on the fast-growing smart devices sector.

Back to the Vibe Z, a 5.5 inch screen phone with full high definition display and a whole lot of interesting features. For instance, it is equipped with high-speed LTE (4G) connectivity (the first LTE enabled smartphone from Lenovo

IDEA LAUNCHED ULTRA II WITH 3G

India’s third largest private telecom operator Idea launched a 3G-enabled smartphone, ULTRA II with a 5.5-inch screen, at a price of Rs 12,500 focusing on driving data penetration in the country through sale of 3G devices.
Idea also launched an entry level 3G smartphone, Idea !d 1000, aimed at first time smartphone buyers and is priced at Rs 5,400, it said in a release. The handsets will be available in the market from next week.
“Lack of availability of affordable 3G smartphones with high-end features is the deterrent to mobile data growth in India. Idea has tried to bridge this gap by offering the best value for money 3G devices, in addition to our superior 3G products, services, and network coverage,” Idea Cellular CMO Sashi Shankar said.
The firm has witnessed a consistent growth in data uptake in its 3G markets where its branded 3G smartphones have been selling, for the past two years, he added.
“This has encouraged us to further expand our devices portfolio with the launch of our first 5.5-inch screen 3G smartphone, ULTRA II, and the entry-level !d 1000, which will help us target consumers at both ends of the spectrum,” he said.
The 5.5-inch Ultra II runs of Android Jelly Bean 4.2 and is powered by a 1.3 Ghz quad-core processor. The handset sports a 8 megapixel rear camera with HDR and a 2 MP front camera with LED flash, it said in a statement. The smartphone will be available across Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra & Goa, MP & Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, UP West and UP East.
“With the launch of two new devices, Idea’s portfolio of 3G smartphones has gone to 15 and the company has already sold over 6.5 lakh devices,” Idea said.

Micromax Canvas Knight Reviews

The Knight has a 5-inch, pin-sharp full HD display with great viewing angles and vibrant colours. The glossy rear panel attracts a lot of fingerprints, but a frosted plastic case is included in the box. Overall, we liked the way the phone fits in the hand.
This is the first phone to use Mediatek's 2Ghz true octa core processor (others are 1.7Ghz): with all eight processor cores working simultaneously. Combined with 2GB RAM, the phone delivers fantastic performance and handles everything from hardware intensive games to full HD videos with ease. In AnTuTu Benchmark, the Canvas Knight scored better than the Samsung Galaxy S4 with a score of 30,682.
The only issue was that it starts to heat up after about 20 minutes of gaming. While the phone comes with 32GB storage and supports USB host, a microSD slot would have still been preferred instead of the second SIM card slot.
Another highlight of the Knight is the 16MP camera. While the camera takes great pictures in daylight as well as low light, we noticed that the software automatically softens the image. Hopefully, Micromax will fix it with a software update.
As for the front 8MP wide-angle camera, it took good 'selfies', but the fixed focus felt limiting.
As expected, the battery lasted from morning till night with mixed usage. Overall, the Knight has a stunning unibody design, a gorgeous display, top notch performance and a fantastic camera at a great price. If you want a device with a true octa core processor and larger display in the same price, consider the Intex Aqua Octa.
Specifications: 2Ghz octa core processor, 2GB RAM, 32GB storage, 5-inch (1920 x 1080 pixels) IPS, 16MP rear camera, 8MP front camera (fixed focus), WiFi, Bluetooth, dual SIM, Android 4.2, 2,350mAh battery

Positives: Gorgeous display, great unibody design, top-notch hardware, 16MP camera takes good photos

Negatives: Camera over-softens images, highly glossy rear panel, no microSD slot for memory expansion

Panasonic Launched P31

Panasonic has launched a mid-range smartphone that hopes to capitalise on a bunch of software features to carve out some success in the Indian market. The Panasonic P31 will be available for a market operating price of for Rs 11,990 from the second week of March.
The company had been heavily teasing the P31 in the run-up to the launch, with each teaser focussing on a particular software feature. Panasonic P31 has a 5-inch display with a disappointing FWVGA resolution (480×854 pixels). We would have hoped for at least a qHD display at this size, but hopefully Panasonic has calibrated the display well enough to eliminate pixilation. The display has an oleophobic coating to prevent oil smudges.
While the phone itself looks rather generic, Panasonic says it has used a Heat-Sink design which lets the phone remain cool even when the CPU is running at full tilt. The glossy white body does not fill us with confidence about how well you can grip it, though; there’s also a ‘Bluish-Black’ model.
There’s a quad-core 1.3GHz processor under the hood, but Panasonic has not mentioned who the chipset maker is. It’s likely to be a MediaTek chipset. Like most low-cost phones released in India these days, the P31 runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, in an age of Android KitKat. There’s an 8MP camera on the back with an LED flash, capable of recording full HD videos, and there’s a VGA camera on the front. The 2000mAh battery should ideally last the whole day considering the low-res display. Rated battery life is 13 hours (2G) and 9 hours (3G) of talk time and a standby time of 650 hours (2G) and 600 hours (3G).
The dual-SIM phone has support for Quad band GSM, HSPA+, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n for cellular and data connectivity, and also sports Bluetooth 4.0, FM radio with RDS, GPS with A-GPS support.

Panasonic has turned the attention from the hardware to software with the P31. It is the first phone to feature the company’s “Play Life” UI with four core features. With Gesture Play, users can draw to unlock the phone and even get to specific apps by using pre-assigned gestures . Pop-I Player lets you watch a video over any other screen, just like Samsung, LG and Micromax phones. A Music CafĂ© app helps in library management and adds additional audio tweaks, while Ultimate Saver helps you manage your battery use and can be tweaked to prolong battery life in emergencies

Nokia Launched X+ , XL With Android

Nokia has launched its first Android smartphone in India. It is available for Rs. 8,599. It may provide tough competition to Micromax and Samsung (entry level Samsung galaxy Y). However, it is not likely to improve Nokia’s image as a low end brand in India.
“India is one of the fastest growing markets for smart phones in the world. With the launch of Nokia X, we are adding more ammunition to our smartphone portfolio,” said P Balaji, managing director, Nokia India. “We believe Nokia X is a unique combination of Nokia quality and experiences, Microsoft services and Android apps. It will resonate with consumers and set a great precedent for the level of quality that can be achieved in the fast-growing, affordable smartphone segment.”
With its 4 inch scratch-proof display and exchangeable back covers in different colours, it is a good looking phone. It runs on the Nokia X Software Platform and is powered by a 1 GHz dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor coupled with 512 MB RAM. It has 3 megapixels fixed focus camera but lacks front facing snapper.
It has Fastlane screen that allows one to switch between different apps smoothly. People can access apps from Nokia Store, more than a dozen third-party app stores and by side loading. All devices are also pre-loaded with a variety of very popular third-party apps and games.

Its key specifications are as follows:

• 4 inch capacitive touchscreen
• 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon Dual Core Processor
• 512MB RAM
• 3 MP camera
• Dual SIM
• Up to 32GB expandable memory
• 1500 mAh battery
• Satellite GPS
• Accelerometer
• Available in Bright Green, Bright Red, Cyan, Yellow, Black and White colours.
